Old vs. New Seoul: Understanding the City’s Layout
Seoul is divided by the Han River into two distinct areas:
- Gangbuk (North of the River) – The historic heart of Seoul, where you’ll find palaces, hanok villages, and traditional markets.
- Gangnam (South of the River) – The modern, upscale district, known for luxury shopping, entertainment, and business.
Let’s start our journey in Jongno, the heart of old Seoul
1. Classic Land – Jongno

Jongno has been the cultural, political, and commercial center of Korea since the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1897). If you want to experience Korea’s deep history, this is where you start.
Must-Visit Spots:
- Gyeongbokgung Palace & Changdeokgung Palace – Stunning royal palaces where you can experience Joseon-era architecture.
- Bukchon Hanok Village – A preserved neighborhood of traditional Korean houses, perfect for a hanbok (Korean traditional attire) photoshoot.
- Insadong – The best place to find traditional Korean crafts, art, and tea houses.
- Jongmyo Shrine – A UNESCO World Heritage site where royal ancestral rituals are still performed.
Jongno is also evolving. Euljiro, once filled with printing shops and hardware stores, has become a trendy hotspot nicknamed "Hipjiro" by young Koreans. The area is now filled with stylish cafes and speakeasy-style bars, blending old and new Seoul in an exciting way.
2. Play Land – Hyehwa

Just 15 minutes north of Jongno is Hyehwa, Seoul’s indie arts district. It’s the heart of Daehak-ro, Korea’s version of Broadway, where you’ll find small theaters, street performances, and experimental art spaces.
This neighborhood is always buzzing with students and artists, making it a great place to experience Seoul’s creative energy.

Just past Myeongdong, you’ll find Namsan Mountain and the famous N Seoul Tower.
Walking along the ancient fortress walls here offers some of the best panoramic views of Seoul. It’s especially stunning in spring (cherry blossoms) and autumn (red and yellow leaves).
Looking for a romantic date spot? Namsan is the perfect place!

Itaewon has long been an expat hub, but it’s also become a creative center for young Korean artists and designers.

East of Itaewon is Seongsu-dong, often called “Seoul’s Brooklyn.”
What was once an industrial area filled with shoe factories is now Seoul’s trendiest neighborhood. Many factory buildings have been converted into chic cafes, art spaces, and pop-up stores, making it a hotspot for creatives.
If you want to experience Seoul’s hipster culture, this is the place to go.

Further west is Yeouido, Korea’s financial district. It’s home to the National Assembly, major banks, and investment firms—essentially, Seoul’s Wall Street.
But Yeouido isn’t just about business. Yeouido Hangang Park is one of the best places in Seoul to relax by the Han River, especially during cherry blossom season.
(Actually, this is my favorite Han River park! I might do a future video about Seoul’s best river parks.)

Hongdae, Seoul’s youth and indie culture district.
